On 18th February 2011, the honourable Minister for Home and Transport, Sri R. Ashoka officially launched the services of the first phase of Tumkur City Transport Service.
Gubbi Labs was engaged by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to propose a research based intervention by introducing a dedicated bus-based city transport service for a medium-sized city - Tumkur, which we had indicated earlier. We are very happy and proud that KSRTC has set the ball rolling. Of the four routes proposed, services on one of the routes has been started and gradually this would be scaled up as the financial support from the State and Central governments come through. For now, we would very much like to see how the introduction of a bus-based public transport system would affect the city's structure and its spatial growth.
In any case, we would like to congratulate KSRTC for this feat and wish them all the very best in this endeavour. Plans are also afoot to introduce similar services in other tier-II cities of the state. Way to go, KSRTC!
